I’ve been on a roll for quite some time now.  I’m not even sure how long it’s been… since pilot season I guess.  That would be last spring.  In my estimation, I’ve had approximately 11 days off since then. Today is not supposed to be one of them and I’ll likely start working right after I’m finished writing this, but, for now, I’m calling it a day off.

What does a person who works that many hours do on a day off? Glad you asked.

I’m one of those crazy seamstresses who likes to use a rolling office chair at the machines. That way I can roll back and forth between machines to save time. It’s all about saving time you see. So, when the rolling begins to become more like work, I know I have to take some action and do some cleaning. Don’t get me wrong… I sweep my workshop out at least once a day and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day, depending on what the project is. I vacuum the entire shop at least once a week as well. I like a clean shop.

Why refer to myself as a ‘crazy’ seamstress?  It’s the wheels…  the thread of a thousand garments is wrapped around each of the five wheels, binding them in place and making it impossible to roll any longer. What shall I do?

Actually it’s not like I haven’t cleaned the caster before… I do it about once every 8-12 months…I think…. I don’t know… I lose track of time.

Today I have a window of opportunity…. I seize the moment, hoist my chair up onto my table and begin to hammer the casters of with my rubber mallet. Five in all, giving them a cursory inspection, I find that they’re worse than I had anticipated.

This would call for the ‘caster de-threading tool kit!!

I took everything out to the back porch, where I began to work away at each wheel. First with the razor blade, then the pliers, and exacto knife.

I just kept jamming the knife in along the side and pried it upward to cut the threads, then I gently pulled the threads out. If you pull too hard the thread wraps tighter and is tougher to get out.  When you finally get it all out, you can use a lighter to burn out the last few threads.

Use a lighter to burn/melt out the last bits of threads.

I was finally finished…

Can you believe the amount of thread I got out of these five casters? Amazing, right?  Ahhh… brings back memories…

I hammered the caster back into the chair legs and my faithful rolling chair is ready for action… which I’m about to take, by starting another project right NOW!

Back on my roll!

It’s been how many days since my last post?… Wow, 3 weeks, too long… Today, was the first full day I’ve been off in at least three weeks, but, I’m thinking that in reality it’s more like 6 weeks. I can’t really remember. What have I been doing?… I can’t really remember that either, but, I’ll try.

Let’s see… oh yeah, 26 costumes for Red Riding Hood, 9 costumes for Fairly Odd Parents, one suit, with long coat for Jim Byrnes‘ character on Sanctuary, 2 jacket linings for my friend, 10 pairs of pants for Sanctuary, 6 T-Shirt for Stargate Universe, and a skirt for myself…I draft the patterns, cut them out and construct them, so it’s fairly time consuming. As you know, I’m also working on my Buggy Bag® business, which has, for the most part been phone calls, emails, filling out forms, approving samples, Trademarks, Patents, manufacturing, Stuffed Articles Act Registrations, Duty Judgements, PO’s, Proforma Invoices, working with designers on hang tag designs, trying to line up bridge financing….shelling out much, much money…. which leads us to the real reason that I haven’t taken any time off. I need to finance my business start-up costs and, support my daughter and myself, at the same time. The build up to this falls commercial airing and it’s outcome is absolutely exciting! I have put so much into this thing… especially the wheelchair lap blanket, that I just can’t wait to get it out to more people. The feed back on last falls batch was so positive, that I just know that this falls’ line is going to be met with even more enthusiasm….it’s even better than before! The Stroller and Jogger models are really looking fantastic too. The commercial is going to focus mainly on them, with a 10 second spot on the wheelchair. The idea is to get a demographic read on the market based on the purchases made, through 150, 1 minute spots… This is going to be really interesting.

Because I work as a contractor, for the film and TV work that I do, I feel compelled to take everything I can possibly manage to do, and sometimes it gets so busy that I don’t see any time to relax… this has been one of those periods. It’s great though, because it is one of the things that I simply love doing.

Ok… well, that’s not quite true… even if I haven’t had a day off, I’ve taken many evenings to enjoy live music, dancing, friends and playing my guitar…. it’s just sometimes hard to squeeze all this fun into one lifetime!

Before I go, I just have to say that last night I went to see a Cuban band by the name of Wil Campa…. an absolutely sexy band and music… fantastic…. Which leads me to my next question… Why don’t more men learn how to dance cuban salsa? It is sooo sexy and at most events there are usually about 4 women to every guy. Last night the place was full of women wanting to dance… here is a link to a fantastic Cuban dance instructor if any of you guys want to learn… Latidos!

Yesterday afternoon, one of the designers that I work for brought me 3 fabrics and some measurements for a little girl. I was to make 3 different dresses, 2 of each.

Usually, you need more than one of any costume for a movie or TV show, just in case. And in most cases because there is a photo double or stunt double, lots of action, dirt or a character gets killed in a messy way.

I make a pattern based on the measurements I’m given, and the design that the designer gives me. Then I cut it out, and begin to sew it together.

Sometimes I get help from “Kitten”, and sometimes I have to try to persuade her into believing that her toys are more interesting than what I’m doing…. not always easy!

Next stage is the construction. In this case, I have to piece some old embroidery pieces onto one of the dresses. Because I have to make two dresses that look the same, and I only have embroidery from one old dress, I have to cut it all apart and piece it together so that both the dresses have the same embroidery look on them. This took me quite a while to do…. not hard, just fiddly.

Many hours later, voila…. I have 6 dresses ready for a fitting on Wednesday! This little girl is going to look so cute!

I’ve decided that I will show a bit more of this side of my work…. I’m not going to say what show it is until it’s released…. Then, I will tell you the name of the movie and the costume designer. Hope you have as much fun with it as I do making them!

I’m very excited because one of my favourite Designers to work for, Monique Prudhomme, has been nominated for an Oscar for the film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. It will be so thrilling to watch the Academy Awards. Last week Monique won the “Excellence in Fantasy Film” award at the 12th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards.
